Analysts forecasted 0.4% increase instead.
It is the lowest Christmas period reading in last 3 years.
According to Eurostat at annual pace index declined 1.6% in December disappointing expectations for 1.3% decrease.
Even the biggest European economies like France and Germany recorded retail sales decrease in that period.
