Apple iPad Pro – An iPad Air 2 on steroids and with a stylus !

Back in summer of 2014, whispers of a big iPad were surfacing on the net. Initial reports were talking about a nearly 13 inches iPad with enhanced speed and characteristics.

Rumors had it and on September the 9th Apple finally introduced the massive iPad Pro at the San Francisco event. As its name suggest its Apple’s first tablet aimed specifically at the business market, building on its partnership with IBM and the recent collaboration with Cisco.

The iPad Pro measures in at 6.9mm thick and tips the scale at just over 700gr, slightly heavier than iPad Air 2. Externally, the iPad Pro looks like a giant iPad Air 2, but its internal hardware puts it on par with desktop-class machines. On stage, Apple CEO, Tim Cook, described the iPad Pro as the “most capable ad powerful” iPad Apple had ever designed.

Propelled by a 64-bit A9X CPU with a build-in M9 motion coprocessor the Pro is almost twice faster at CPYU and GPU tasks than iPad Air 2. That’s a lot of horsepower crammed into just 6.9mm. Storage wise it will be offered in two versions – 32GB and 128GB both in Wi-Fi and 4G/LTE variations.

The jewel of the crown is off course again the HUGE 12.9″  display which has a resolution of 2732 x 2048. Add on that a 226ppi and you have a total of 5.6 million pixels glowing with fabulous and accurate colors. To drive all that pixels Apple used technology from the 5K Retina iMac, plus unique display techniques to give it the best possible contrast ratio, uniform color and brightness.

It has also an “all day” 10-hour battery life despite its massive screen and blazing speed internals. The camera at the back is packed with 8-megapixels for taking photos and the 1.2-megapixel front camera is there to  fulfill the task of selfies and business video conference calls.

For the first time in its glorious history apple is offering a tablet with a pen (although optional) – a move that brought both positive and negative reactions. It is a pressure sensitive stylus with multiple sensors that are able to detect position, force and tilt. it is there to increase iPad Pro’s usefulness for creative and productivity based tasks but also for taking humble notes. A smart keyboard is also optional for the users than need to type more than daily emails and messages.

IPad Pro will be available for purchase in November although Apple has not yet unveiled a specific launch date. Both capacities (32GB and 128GB) will be available at launch although Cellular 128GB version is going to be a released a bit later.

Apple is finally ready to compete with the “big” guns in the market,  a.k.a Microsoft Surface3 Pro and Samsung Note Pro. Although still a matter of personal preference and requirements it will be quite interesting to see how it will end up considering market share.
